Staff retention: Keeping your ear to the ground

This information suggests that working conditions are a secondary consideration in an employee’s decision to leave.

Active listening

You may be surprised to know that one of the main topics covered in this training was active listening. Yes! Active listening in a staff retention training course! To demonstrate how little time we invest in conversations that extend beyond superfluous ones, would you be able to answer the following questions: What are your employees’ work motivations? What are their professional or personal aspirations? These questions seem quite simple, but most of us can’t answer them. How, then, do we expect to motivate our teams? Many approaches exist to optimize and promote listening in your teams.

A two-way street

So that you realize the degree to which our listening skills are lacking, here’s a powerful and extremely effective exercise two people can practice together! In turn, each person must talk for one minute about what they want. The other person is not allowed to speak and has to listen for one full minute. You will discover that people aren’t accustomed to being listened to and listening with no intention of replying. One minute may seem short, but we bet this exercise will surprise you enormously! This listening exercise helps bring people together and ensures they form a cohesive team. Take the time to listen to them! Doing so will have a positive effect on your work and that of others!

In short, never underestimate the interpersonal dimension of your relationship with your employees. It could save you a lot of time, stress and money in the future!
